Power generation plant — filtration and fluid management for thermal, nuclear, hydro and wind energy

Power Generation

ENERGY TECHNOLOGY

Klarwin integrates filtration, mechanical separation and advanced purification solutions for the energy production industry — across thermal, nuclear, hydro and wind power plants. Each solution is adapted to the specific application, operating environment and safety standards, protecting the critical fluids: cooling water, oils, steam, fuels and compressed air.

Thermal Power Plants

In thermoelectric power plants — coal, gas or biomass — filtration protects turbines, boilers and heat exchangers from particles, corrosion products and organic contamination. Klarwin provides complete solutions for:

  • Cooling water filtration — self-cleaning filters, basket strainers, side-stream filtration for open and closed circuits
  • Turbine oil purification — vacuum dehydration, fine filtration and varnish removal to extend oil life and protect bearings
  • Fuel filtration — coalescers and separators for gas turbine fuel (diesel, HFO, natural gas)
  • Boiler feedwater treatment — condensate polishing, pre-filtration for demineralization systems
  • Compressed air filtration — oil removal and drying for instrument and control air
  • Flue gas treatment support — filtration of reagent slurries (limestone, activated carbon) used in desulfurization and emission control

Nuclear Power Plants

Nuclear power plants operate under the strictest safety and quality standards. Every filtration system must meet nuclear-grade specifications for material traceability, seismic qualification and radiological compatibility. Klarwin integrates filtration solutions for all critical circuits:

Primary circuit

  • Reactor coolant purification — high-temperature, high-pressure filters with nuclear-grade materials (Inconel, stainless steel) for removal of corrosion products and activated particles
  • Spent fuel pool filtration — cartridge and bag filters rated for boric acid environments and radiation exposure
  • Radioactive waste treatment — filtration of liquid radioactive effluents before discharge or solidification
  • Containment sump strainers — passive debris retention during loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) scenarios

Secondary circuit

  • Steam generator blowdown filtration — removal of suspended solids to prevent tube fouling and corrosion
  • Condensate polishing — mixed-bed ion exchange with pre-filtration for ultra-pure feedwater quality
  • Cooling water systems — self-cleaning filters and strainers for condenser protection
  • Feedwater treatment — fine filtration upstream of demineralization and reverse osmosis systems

Oil systems

  • Turbine and generator oil purification — vacuum dehydration, fine filtration and online particle monitoring to maintain ISO cleanliness codes

Reference: Klarwin has supplied filtration systems to Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant (Units 1 & 2), the only operational nuclear facility in Romania.

Hydroelectric Power Plants

Hydroelectric plants face unique filtration challenges due to the variable quality of river and reservoir water — high sediment loads, biological growth and seasonal fluctuations. Klarwin provides solutions for:

  • Intake water screening — automatic self-cleaning screens and strainers to remove debris, algae and aquatic organisms
  • Turbine cooling water filtration — protection of bearing cooling circuits and heat exchangers from suspended solids
  • Hydraulic oil filtration — high-pressure filtration for turbine governor and wicket gate control systems
  • Transformer oil purification — degassing, dehydration and fine particle removal to maintain dielectric strength
  • Bearing oil systems — continuous filtration and water removal to prevent bearing wear and extend oil change intervals
  • Environmental protection — oil-in-water monitoring and separation at discharge points to meet environmental regulations

Wind Power Plants

Wind turbines operate in remote, harsh environments where maintenance access is limited and costly. Fluid cleanliness is essential to prevent gearbox failures — the leading cause of unplanned downtime in wind farms. Klarwin provides:

  • Gearbox oil filtration — offline kidney-loop filtration systems with fine filters (3–6 µm) to maintain ISO 4406 cleanliness targets
  • Online particle monitoring — continuous ISO code tracking with automatic alerts for contamination events or filter bypass
  • Hydraulic pitch system filtration — high-pressure filters for blade pitch control, preventing valve and actuator wear
  • Oil dehydration — vacuum or air-stripping systems to remove water ingress from condensation and seal leaks
  • Transformer oil treatment — purification of pad-mounted transformer oils for onshore and offshore substations
Wind turbines — gearbox oil filtration and monitoring systems
